Lawyer turned chef, author and creator of Skinny Latina™, Ana Quincoces is happiest in the kitchen preparing delicious, nostalgic Cuban recipes from her childhood for her family and friends. Passionate about both the appeal of Cuban flavors and the art of cooking, Ana exchanged the courtroom for the kitchen to embark on a personal mission to inspire others to cook, sharing her signature Latin flair while empowering her community with resources to become confident in the kitchen. Three cookbooks, a growing retail line and an upcoming turn on Season 12 of “Food Network Star” later… Ana’s mission is well underway.
Raised in a Cuban household in Miami, Ana spent countless hours as her mother’s sous chef where she fell in love with the nuances, flavor and relaxed elegance of her family’s native cuisine. Initially viewing cooking as no more than a beloved hobby and daily necessity, Ana pursued a career in real estate law. For two decades, she balanced a rigorous work schedule with her family life, always ensuring she made time to cook with her daughters, Kati and Beba, and to pass along generations of kitchen secrets and recipes.
Cuban Cuisine for a New Generation
For decades, only two cookbooks – both published in the 1950s – defined Cuban cuisine. Passed from generation to generation, they could be found in nearly every Cuban-American kitchen, however when it came time for Ana to share her passion with her own daughters, she found these staple guidebooks difficult to follow and outdated. Unable to find a new, accessible and authentic Cuban cookbook that appealed to a younger generation, Ana created the solution and self-published Cuban Chicks Can Cook (May 2005). User-friendly and filled with classic Cuban recipes and personal anecdotes, the book served as both a tribute to her mother and a legacy for her daughters.
Spreading the ‘Sabor’
In 2008, at a time when the real estate market took a severe downturn, Ana was serendipitously approached to write her second cookbook, Sabor: A Passion For Cuban Cuisine (Running Press, October 2008). Featuring twice as many recipes as her first book, Sabor embraces Ana’s Cuban roots and offers simple and adaptable recipes. Gaining confidence and momentum from her successful book sales, Ana decided to focus on evolving her culinary career. She was voted Miami’s “hottest chef” by Eater in 2011 and made her reality TV debut on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Miami in 2012. Her unique wit, particular brand of humor, and no-nonsense, unpretentious attitude made her a fan-favorite, earning both their love and loyalty.
Expanding Her Brand
Solidifying her position as a notable Miami chef fluent in Cuban cuisine, Ana was commissioned to co-author The Versailles Restaurant Cookbook (University Press of Florida, September 2014), filled with recipes from one of the world’s most famous Cuban restaurants in Miami. In the same year, she expanded her growing brand onto grocery store shelves, introducing her Skinny Latina™ line with the launch of her Million Dollar Marinade. Dubbed as “cooking courage in a bottle,” the multi-faceted product can be used as a marinade, cooking sauce, flavor enhancer or base for other sauces. Ana is developing new Skinny Latina™ products including Guava and Mango BBQ Sauces, Mojo Ketchup, Mango Chipotle Habanero Hot Sauce and Spice of Life All Purpose Seasoning which will launch this summer.
Food Network Star
A regular face at food festivals and events across the country, Ana’s spirited and competitive nature and recognition as a culinary force earned her a slot as a contestant on the 12th season of Food Network’s smash hit, “Food Network Star” (premiering Sunday, May 22nd). Confident that she offers exactly what Food Network is missing, Ana will show viewers how to spice up their dishes with her signature Cuban flair. Ana splits her time between Miami and New York City and enjoys spending time with her daughters, participating in speaking engagements and supporting charitable organizations, including Amigos for Kids, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Jackson Memorial Hospital Guardian Angels.
